Santorini Airport (JTR) lies on the flat eastern side of the island at Monolithos, 6 km from Fira and a few minutes from Kamari beach, on the only stretch of ground level enough for a runway. It shares that runway with the Hellenic Air Force. Around two and a half million passengers pass through it a year, a number that has outgrown the terminal several times over, and nearly all of them come between April and October.

Fraport Greece enlarged the building in 2021, but Santorini remains the smallest big airport in Greece: one hall, a handful of gates, few seats and, on August afternoons, a queue at everything. The bus stop and taxi rank are directly outside; most of the island’s 40 or so taxis are somewhere else when you need one.

Transport

Fira is 6 km away: about €30 by taxi or €2 on the KTEL bus. Santorini has only about 40 taxis for millions of visitors, so a pre-booked transfer or hotel shuttle is the norm, and Oia (about €45) is best arranged in advance.

Parking

A small car park sits beside the terminal, from about €3 an hour or €10 a day. Few visitors ever use it: rental cars and quads go back to the rental lots, and everyone else arrives by transfer. The forecourt is the real problem.

Car rental

Rental desks are in the arrivals hall with cars and quads a short walk away. Santorini is small, its caldera villages are car-free and parking in Fira and Oia is a daily battle, so many visitors rent for a day or two rather than the whole stay. Book early: the island runs out of everything in August.

Book your transfer before you fly. Santorini has about 40 taxis for an island that receives several jets an hour in August, and the rank queue routinely passes an hour.

The departures hall has very few seats. Two hours before a flight is enough; three means standing. Kamari beach is five minutes away and a far better place to spend the spare hour.

Sit on the left side landing from the north for the caldera, the right side for the volcano. Departures climb out over Kamari with Anafi on the horizon.

On cruise-ship days, up to four ships tender into Fira and the town’s streets seize up by 11:00. If your flight is at midday, leave the caldera hotel earlier than the transfer company suggests.

The meltemi blows hard from the north in July and August. Approaches are bumpy, go-arounds are not unusual and evening arrivals sometimes divert to Athens; check the live board before heading to the airport to meet someone.
